Averett University Athletics

Kirkland Brown rejoined the Averett University football coaching staff as offensive coordinator in June 2020. He will also coach the offensive line.

Brown returns to Averett following a three-year stint at Oak Grove High School in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. At Oak Grove, Brown served as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from 2017-2019. In his final season at Oak Grove, his team went 10-2 and won the Central Carolina Conference championship while averaging 40 points per game and producing the conference's offensive player of the year and five all-conference selections. Brown also was an assistant coach with Oak Grove's varsity basketball program while teaching in the school’s exceptional children’s department.

A two-time Averett alum, Brown served as a graduate assistant coach for the Cougars from 2015-16. He coached tight ends in 2015 and coached wide receivers in 2016 while also serving as the academic and film coordinator for the program.
 
Before he began his coaching career, Brown played quarterback for Averett. In his five years with the program (including a medical redshirt), Brown picked up many awards both on and off the field. He exhibited great sportsmanship on the field, earning the 2015 Dr. Frank Campbell Sportsmanship Award at Averett along with being named to the USA South Conference All-Sportsmanship Team twice. Brown succeeded in the classroom as well, earning USA South Academic All-Conference honors five times. On the field, Brown threw for a combined total of 3,612 yards and 25 touchdowns at the quarterback position and was the team captain his junior and senior seasons.
 
A native of Lexington, North Carolina, Brown graduated from Averett in the spring of 2015 with a bachelor’s degree in sports management and earned his master’s degree in education at Averett in 2017.

Brown and his wife Hope are expecting their first child in September 2020.
