Pete Shaw joined the Averett University football program as the defensive coordinator and defensive line coach in March 2015.
Shaw comes to Averett with 34 years of coaching experience at the college, high school and professional levels dating back to 1980. Prior to serving as the football head coach at Colts Neck High School in New Jersey in 2014, Shaw was a long-time assistant coach at Ferrum College alongside now Averett head coach Cleive Adams. He worked with linebackers, defensive backs, the defensive line, receivers and special teams at various times while at Ferrum from 2003-2014.
In addition to Ferrum, Shaw has Division III coaching experience at Rowan University (1997-99), William Paterson University (1995-97), Iona College (1984) and at the State University of New York College at Cortland (1980). He also has coached at Division I University of Tennessee at Martin (1999), University of Kentucky (1987-89), Western Kentucky University (1981-83) and Division II Kutztown University (1989-93), as well as numerous high schools in New Jersey, Georgia and Florida. At the pro level, Shaw was the head coach of the arena2 Roanoke Steam (1999-2000) and served as an assistant coach for the Arena Football League’s New Jersey Red Dogs (1997-99) and New Jersey Gladiators (2002-2003).
A native of New York, Shaw earned a bachelor's degree in Education from SUNY Cortland in 1981 before completing a master's degree in Education from Western Kentucky in 1983.
He and his wife, Judy, have two sons, T.J. and Chris.
