Scott McConnell joined the Averett University football staff as the defensive backs coach in February of 2019.
McConnell came to Averett after serving as the tight ends coach for the 2018 season at Division I Hampton University.

Before arriving at Hampton, McConnell was the defensive coordinator and director of football operations at The Apprentice School where the defense finished in the top 10 in 18 categories on the school’s historical record book.

Prior to Apprentice, McConnell coached at Jireh Preparatory Academy and locally at Hargrave Military Academy. The Mount Carmel, Tennessee, native started his coaching career at his alma mater, Emory & Henry College, as a recruiting assistant. He then moved onto Southern Virginia University and West Virginia Wesleyan College as an assistant coach on both staffs.

McConnell received his bachelors in physical education with a concentration in sport management along with minors in coaching and economics from Emory & Henry in 2008. A four-year letterman of the Wasp football team, McConnell was voted to the 2007 Academic All-ODAC Team.
McConnell and his wife Jessica live in Danville.
