Chris Akers was named as Averett's men's and women's interim tennis head coach in October 2012.
Akers comes to Averett after serving as the boys' tennis coach at nearby George Washington High School from 2005-2012. He guided his 2010 Eagles squad to a 14-2 record and the program's first district title since 1986, and his teams made consecutive regional tournament appearances in 2010 and 2011.
Akers has also served as GW's assistant varsity football coach since 2004 and the junior varsity head coach since 2006. He also had a stint as the GW freshmen boys' basketball coach from 2004-2008.
A native of Bluefield, Va., Akers earned his bachelor's degree from Radford University in 2004. He teaches physical education at Westwood Middle School in Danville.
