Doug Wohlstein has served as assistant coach for Averett University cross country/track and field operations since July 2022. Previously, he served as interim head coach for men’s and women’s cross country during the 2021 season.

In his season as interim head coach with the cross country program, Wohlstein helped develop the Cougars' roster in six races during the fall, including an appearance by several men's and women's runners in the NCAA South/Southeast Regionals.

Wohlstein, who also joined the institution as an instructor of health and sport science in 2021, brings a wealth of knowledge to Averett’s programs through his background in running, training and coaching. Wohlstein was an avid triathlon competitor for 15 years, competing in two Ironman triathlons, seven half Ironmans and more than 50 other races. Along the way, Wohlstein began programming workouts and training others. In 2010, Wohlstein shifted from competing in triathlons to obstacle course racing. During an eight-year span, he twice qualified and competed in two world championships. In 2018, an injury led Wohlstein to change his focus to the sport of CrossFit.

As a coach, Wohlstein has been a part of six semifinal appearances and four state championships at the high school level while coaching volleyball, soccer and baseball. He has 17 years of experience teaching physical education in addition to serving as a professor at Georgia Southern University, Radford University and Averett.

Wohlstein, who was born in Columbus, Ohio, and grew up in Orlando, Florida, earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from the University of Central Florida in 1996 and completed his master’s degree in educational leadership from Nova Southeastern University in 1999. He is currently pursuing his doctorate in health science from Radford University.

Wohlstein lives in Danville with his wife Melissa and daughter Alex.
