Steve Alcorn was named Averett University’s softball head coach in August 2019.
Although his first season as head coach at Averett was shortened, Alcorn had the Cougars poised for another successful run. The team went 10-2, including a win over No. 7 Virginia Wesleyan University, and was 2-0 in USA South Conference play when the season was halted. Averett received votes in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association's final Top 25 poll. During the 2020 campaign, Alcorn had two players earn weekly accolades from the USA South. When the season ended, Averett was batting .302 as a team, including five players hitting .320 or better. Through 12 games, the Cougars had 51 runs batted in with seven homers, four triples and 17 doubles. The Averett pitching staff had a 1.84 earned run average while allowing just 15 earned runs in 12 contests.
In his second season with the Cougars, Averett went 8-4 in USA South Conference play while producing four all-conference selections.
Alcorn took over Averett’s program after serving two seasons as an assistant coach at NAIA University of Mobile, where he primarily worked as the pitching coach. In 2019, Alcorn helped guide nationally ranked Mobile to its second consecutive Southern States Athletic Conference regular season title before winning the conference tournament and region championship to qualify for the World Series. In 2018, Mobile also won the region and advanced to the World Series while garnering a national ranking. At Mobile, Alcorn helped coach two SSAC Pitcher of the Year selections, four NAIA All-America selections, 17 all-conference honorees and six all-region selections. Off the field, Mobile produced 27 all-academic team selections during those two seasons. In addition, Mobile’s coaching staff was named the 2018 and 2019 NFCA Region II Coaching Staff of the Year.
Before the Rams’ entire coaching staff was recruited to the University of Mobile, Alcorn was an assistant coach in 2017 with the same staff at Division II Spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama. While he was there, Spring Hill had three all-conference selections. Alcorn also served as an assistant coach during the 2016 season at Division III College of Wooster in Ohio.
Alcorn’s experience expands beyond coaching college softball. He coached high school softball for 10 seasons in Hummelstown, Pennsylvania, and was a long-time travel softball coach, including five years coaching Gold Level softball. He also was the head coach for The Performance Lab team in the American Softball Association Women’s Professional League in Mobile during the summer of 2019, earning the league's Coach of the Year award. In addition to coaching, Alcorn was a police officer for 25 years in Pennsylvania.
A native of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Alcorn earned his bachelor of science degree in business administration and marketing from Towson University. He also played baseball for the Tigers.
Alcorn and his wife Kim have three daughters — Lauren, Casey and Shelby.
