Desireé Driver was named Averett University’s women’s basketball head coach in August 2021.
Driver completed her third year at Averett, as she continued the Cougars' transition to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference in 2022-23 after more than 40 years as members of the USA South Athletic Conference. She produced one all-conference performer in 2021-22, and her 2022-23 team ranked in the top 10 nationally in offensive rebounding.
When she was hired, Driver was no stranger to the Averett and the USA South Conference. Prior to coming to Averett, she had served as the women’s basketball assistant coach at fellow USA South member N.C. Wesleyan College since October 2012. In 2021, she helped guide the Bishops to the USA South East Division title following a 12-0 record in conference and a 15-1 mark overall, including a win over Division I UNC Greensboro. While at N.C. Wesleyan, Driver also worked as the director of intramural sports and recreation. Before returning to her alma mater, Driver spent one year as the assistant varsity and junior varsity girls’ basketball coach at Flagler Palm Coast High School in Palm Coast, Florida. Driver has additional coaching experience working with various camps and clinics.
A native of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Driver was a four-year starter for the N.C. Wesleyan women’s basketball program from 2007-11. A two-time team captain, Driver earned USA South Academic All-Conference honors all four years and earned the Scholar Athlete Award three times.
Driver earned her bachelor of science in exercise science in 2011 from N.C. Wesleyan, and she completed her master’s degree in parks, recreation, tourism and sports management from North Carolina State University in 2016.
