Kelsey Smith joined the Averett University volleyball staff as an assistant coach in July 2015.
In her first year with the Cougars, Averett finished 27-11 overall and 17-2 in the USA South Conference while winning the USA South's North Division championship. Smith helped coach three USA South All-Conference selections, as well as one American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-America selection and one AVCA All-Region Selection, one all-state selection and one all-state rookie of the year.
A native of Cascade, Virginia, Smith played collegiately at Division II Elizabeth City State University, where she served as team captain of the volleyball team for two seasons and earned All-Conference honors. Smith was selected to the 2014 CIAA All-Conference First Team during her senior year and held a spot on 2013 All-Conference Second Team during her junior year. As a middle hitter in her senior season, Smith was ranked first in the CIAA in solo blocks with 54, second in blocks per set with 1.02 and fifth in kills during conference play with 187. She led her team in blocks during all four seasons to total 322 career blocks, and she also recorded 717 career kills. Additionally, Smith received the Pepsi Volleyball Award from ECSU Athletics in 2013 and 2014.
Smith graduated in May 2015 from Elizabeth City State with a bachelor's degree in accounting. She is pursuing her master's degree in business administration from Averett.
