Brandon Woody returned to Averett University’s men’s wrestling program as an assistant coach in July 2022 after wrestling for the Cougars the previous five seasons.
Woody had a storied collegiate wrestling career at Averett from 2018-2022. A two-time NCAA Division III national qualifier and All-American, Woody compiled a 149-32 career record in five seasons, which ranks second all-time in total wins. The three-time all-state selection placed sixth at the 2022 NCAA Division III national championships at 141 pounds, knocking off the No. 7 seed Sam Stuhl of Augsburg University and No. 2 seed and 2021 national champion Jimmy McAuliffe of Elmhurst College by a 7-6 decision in the quarterfinals. Also during his final season, Woody placed third at the NCAA Southeast Regional and was runner-up at the Southeast Wrestling Conference Tournament. During his career he was Averett's first-ever Southeast Wrestling Conference Tournament champion as a sophomore, and he was a four-time NCAA Southeast Region placer. Woody also was named the Outstanding Wrestler at the Virginia Duals in 2019-20. Consistently ranked regionally and nationally, Woody also won his weight class at the 2022 D3 College Championships and was a U23 Greco-Roman All-American.
Woody also earned academic accolades as a 2022 NWCA Division III Scholar All-American.
Prior to Averett, Woody was a two-time state champion and four-time Virginia state placer while at Matoaca High School.
In addition to his experience as a competitor, Woody has worked numerous camps and clinics, including Averett wrestling clinics, the Ken Chertow wrestling camp in 2021 and has given back to the wrestling community at his alma mater, Matoaca high School, and club team Virginia Team Predator.
A native of Chesterfield, Virginia, Woody completed his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Averett in May 2022 and is pursuing his master’s degree in business administration from Averett.
