Chris Miller joins the Averett University women’s basketball program as a volunteer assistant coach, bringing decades of coaching and teaching experience at the middle and high school levels.

Prior to joining Averett, Miller retired from Southern Alamance High School in Graham, North Carolina, where he served as a physical education and weightlifting teacher. During his tenure with the Alamance-Burlington School System, he built an extensive coaching career that began at Woodlawn Middle School. He served as an assistant football coach and assistant girls’ basketball coach before becoming the school’s head boys’ basketball coach.

Miller later transitioned to the high school level, where he coached multiple sports, including women’s and men’s basketball, football, and softball. As a head softball coach, he led programs at Southern Alamance and Eastern Alamance high schools for a combined 21 years, with his teams advancing to the state playoffs each year. He was also recognized as Coach of the Year multiple times.

Miller has also spent 30 years as an assistant football coach at Southern Alamance and Eastern Alamance high schools. In 2018, he was selected to serve as an assistant football coach for the NCCA East-West All-Star Game. He currently continues his high school coaching career as an assistant football coach at Southern Alamance.

Miller’s passion for basketball has remained a constant throughout his coaching career. During the 2012-13 season, he served as head coach of the Southern Alamance women’s basketball team, leading the program to the second round of the state playoffs and earning Coach of the Year honors. After stepping away from the head coaching role to reduce a demanding three-sport coaching schedule, he later returned to the program as an assistant women’s basketball coach for three additional years.

In 2020, after narrowing his coaching responsibilities to football, Miller returned to basketball as the head men’s basketball coach, a position he held for three years. His extensive experience coaching multiple sports, developing student-athletes, and leading teams at both the middle and high school levels brings a wealth of knowledge and perspective to his role with the Averett women’s basketball program.

Miller earned his bachelor’s degree and teaching certification from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
