Mark Smith joined the Averett University women's basketball coaching staff as an assistant coach in September 2026.
Smith comes to Averett with more than five years of coaching experience at the collegiate and high school levels. Most recently, he served as an assistant women's basketball coach at Johnson & Wales University in Charlotte, North Carolina, beginning in November 2024. During his time with the Wildcats, Smith developed training programs focused on individual skill development and team coordination while assisting with NCAA-compliant recruiting and evaluating prospective student-athletes. He also conducted film breakdown and scouting reports, mentored student-athletes on academic accountability and time management, and helped foster a positive and competitive team culture.
Prior to Johnson & Wales, Smith served as an assistant women's basketball coach at Saint Mary's College in Notre Dame, Indiana, during the 2022-23 season. He helped direct practices and contribute to game strategy while working specifically with post players, helping them achieve top conference rebounding statistics. Smith also utilized scouting analytics to develop defensive schemes tailored to opponents and collaborated with academic support staff to promote student-athlete success in the classroom.
Smith began his coaching career with Riley High School in South Bend, Indiana, where he served as the girls’ junior varsity basketball coach from 2021-22. He also coached with the South Bend Breakers youth basketball program from 2018-23, working with athletes on fundamentals, teamwork and sportsmanship while coordinating tournament schedules, travel logistics, fundraising and community events.
Hailing from South Bend, Indiana, Smith earned his bachelor's degree in kinesiology from Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) in May 2018.
