Thomas Underwood moved to Averett University faculty in June 2022 while also serving as Sports Medicine and Operations Administrator. Underwood previously served as Averett's Assistant Director of Athletics/Director of Sports Medicine since May 2022. Underwood became Averett's Director of Sports Medicine/Head Athletic Trainer in July 2014 after serving as assistant athletic trainer since September 2011.
Underwood was named Averett's 2020 Staff Member of the Year for his crucial role to the success, safety and welfare of Averett's student-athletes, as well as his diligent work to ensure the health and safety of Averett's faculty, staff and students during the COVID-19 pandemic. In November 2017, Underwood was awarded with the Excellence in Teaching Award from Averett's chapter of the National Society of Leadership and Success for his commitment to grow the university's students.
Underwood is a 2008 graduate of Averett University with a bachelor’s degree in sports medicine. While at Averett as a student, he worked with football, baseball and men’s soccer teams as a student trainer from December 2007 to December 2008. Underwood also had the opportunity to intern with the Green Bay Packers the summer of 2008.
Prior to joining Averett's training staff, Underwood worked at Guilford Orthopedic Clinic in Greensboro, N.C.
Underwood currently resides in Danville with his wife, Jennifer, and their children, Colton and Collins.
