David Doino has served as the head coach of the Averett men's basketball program since August 2014 and has led the Cougars to four USA South Athletic Conference regular season crowns, one USA South Tournament title and one NCAA Tournament appearance since taking over the program.
Doino guided his 2021-22 team to a 17-12 mark with a 11-3 record in conference play as the Cougars won the USA South's East Division during the regular season. Averett then cut down the nets at the tournament championship for the first time under Doino, punching a ticket to the NCAA Tournament for the fifth time in program history since 1990. Doino was rewarded as the USA South Coach of the Year for the third time as the Cougars brought home the championship in their final season as members of the USA South before moving to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference on July 1, 2022.
The 2021-22 was just one of many memorable seasons for Doino as head coach of the program. In his sixth season as head coach during the 2019-20 campaign, Doino led Averett to a 20-9 overall record with a 15-2 mark in the USA South. The 20 overall wins tied the program record for most victories in a single season and set the Averett record for conference wins in a season. Doino's Cougars also rattled off a 14-game win streak in the process. Averett had two all-conference performers as Doino was named USA South Coach of the Year for the second time.
In 2020-21, the Cougars overcame the obstacles of a postponed start to the season and multiple game postponements to go 6-7 overall with a 5-5 conference mark. Doino's team knocked off top seed N.C. Wesleyan College in the divisional semifinals to help the Cougars advance to the USA South East Division championship game.
Doino has shown success on the sidelines throughout his tenure as the Cougars' head coach. In his first season as Averett, he coached the Cougars to an 18-9 overall record, a 11-3 mark in the conference and the 2014-15 USA South Conference regular season championship, the program's sixth title. He also coached three USA South All-Conference selections, including two USA South First Team performers. In his second season, Averett went 15-11 while knocking off a Division II opponent and several solid non-conference foes. He also produced one all-conference selection.
Perhaps his best coaching performance came during the 2016-17 season. After his team opened the season 2-10 against tough competition, Doino guided the Cougars to a share of the USA South regular season crown and the top seed in the conference tournament. He also produced two USA South All-Conference First Team selections, including the USA South Player of the Year. As a result, Doino earned recognition from his peers as the 2016-17 USA South Coach of the Year.
In 2017-18, Doino led the Cougars to a 5-0 record against ODAC competition and also produced his second consecutive USA South Player of the Year, as well as the D3hoops.com Region Player of the Year, National Basketball Coaches Association (NABC) All-District Selection and Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) State Player of the Year.
In 2022-23, coming off the NCAA appearance, Doino guided the Cougars through Averett's conference transition to the ODAC. His 2024-25 squad rolled out to a 5-0 start that included two top-25 wins, including beating then-No. 20 Maryville College on the road and then rolling past then-No. 10 Christopher Newport University. He produced one All-ODAC selection, multiple ODAC weekly award winners and a D3hoops.com Team of the Week selection.
In just 11 seasons, Doino has become Averett's all-time winningest coach in overall victories as well as in conference play.
Doino became the ninth coach of the men's basketball program since it began NCAA play in 1976. He took over a program that has a history of success, including four NCAA Tournament appearances and five conference championships. He came to Averett after serving as an assistant coach at North Carolina Wesleyan College.
During his seven seasons as an assistant at fellow USA South Conference foe N.C. Wesleyan, Doino helped guide the Battling Bishops to a 106-79 record with one NCAA Tournament appearance, one USA South Conference Tournament championship and two conference regular season titles. He also helped coach two USA South Players of the Year and two National Basketball Coaches Association All-Americans. At N.C. Wesleyan, Doino was responsible for recruiting, scouting, directing strength and conditioning and monitoring the academic progress of men's basketball team.
Prior to working at N.C. Wesleyan, Doino was an assistant coach at Virginia Wesleyan from 2005 through 2007, where he helped coach the Marlins to the 2006 NCAA Division III national championship. A year later, he helped Virginia Wesleyan return to the championship game, where the Marlins finished as the 2007 national runner-up. Doino also served as a student-assistant at Virginia Wesleyan during the 2004-2005 season.
In addition to coaching basketball, Doino has been N.C. Wesleyan's community service coordinator since 2007. He has also had stints as the head coach for N.C. Wesleyan men's cross country and men's golf teams. In addition, he coached the men's golf team at Virginia Wesleyan from 2005-2007.
A native of Bronx, New York, Doino is a 2005 graduate of Virginia Wesleyan with a degree in communications. While a student at Virginia Wesleyan, he was a four-year starter for the Marlins' men's basketball program. He helped Virginia Wesleyan go 70-36 while advancing to the 2004 Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship game. He finished his career as a 1,000-point scorer and a three-time All-ODAC selection.
Doino lives in the Danville area with his wife, Lauren, and sons, Anthony and Joseph.
