RALEIGH, N.C. — Averett defeated Peace College 60-52 in its season finale on Saturday to set the program record for wins in a season. The Cougars (14-11, 10-8 USA South) surpassed the old record of 13, set by the 1996-97 squad that finished 13-12.

Averett, which led 20-14 at the break, never trailed in the second half. The Cougars got 16 points from senior #Taylor Poirier, who made history herself. Poirier played her 101 career game, tying the school record held by three others.

Freshman Liz Martin, who was the hero in Friday night's win, added 15 points and sophomore Ashley Washington scored 10 points and grabbed 17 boards.

Peace (11-14, 7-11 USA South) led early on, but Averett took the lead for good on a Martin 3-pointer with 5:34 to play in the first half.

The Pacers were led by LeAnne Horne's 17 points.

Averett's 10 conference wins also is a new school record, and it is the first time in school history that the Cougars have had a winning season in conference play.

Averett earns the No. 5 seed in the USA South Conference tournament, which begins next week. The Cougars will travel to Winchester to play No. 4 Shenandoah on Tuesday. Click here for a complete bracket.
