Averett comes up short against Lynchburg

Averett's Kenny Hart led all scorers with 20 points.

Box Score

DANVILLE, Va. — Averett closed the gap to three points with just over a minute to play, but Lynchburg College held on for a 63-58 victory on Monday night at the Grant Center.

Lynchburg (3-2) led the entire second half, but the Cougars stayed on the Hornets' heels for most of the period. Lynchburg briefly pushed its lead to as much as 12 points with 8:57 to play, but Averett (1-6) had it back down to a two-possession game minutes later.

Averett junior Kenny Hart, who finished with a season-high 20 points, nailed a 3-pointer with 1:13 remaining to cut Lynchburg's lead down to 61-58, but the Hornets' Nate Campbell answered with a jump shot at the other end. The Cougars had several possessions in the final minute but couldn't get any closer as they dropped their sixth game in a row — five of which have come by nine points or less.

Campbell and Tucker Lucas, who was 5-for-10 from beyond the arc, led Lynchburg with 18 points apiece. Campbell also had 11 rebounds.

Averett sophomore Justin Pierce had seven of his nine points in the first half, which saw Averett take as much as a four-point lead with 4:54 left. The Hornets, however, battled back to take a 42-39 lead into the locker rooms.

Averett returns to action on Dec. 11 against No. 3 Eastern Mennonite University at the Bridgewater College/Don Glick Classic.
