DANVILLE, Va. — Averett senior
Jeremy Dixon set a school receiving record, but Ferrum College spoiled the Cougars' Senior Day with a 34-13 win on Saturday at the Cougar Den.
Dixon set a school single-game record with 182 receiving yards, breaking the previous mark of 174 set last season by
Anthony Squillini. He also accounted for Averett's only touchdown of the contest when freshman
Kirkland Brown hit Dixon with a 61-yard pass down the right sideline to cut Ferrum's lead to 34-13. Averett (5-4, 3-3 USA South) , however, couldn't manage to put together another scoring drive the rest of the way.
The loss also ended Averett's remaining chances at the USA South Conference championship.
The Cougars grabbed a 3-0 lead on sophomore
Brad Scott's 24-yard field goal midway through the first quarter. A Ferrum fumble gave Averett possession in Panthers territory, but the Cougars couldn't convert. Averett fell inches short on fourth down on the Ferrum 19-yard line.
Ferrum (4-5, 4-2 USA South) jumped ahead 7-3 on a 9-yard touchdown run by Steven Harris in the second quarter, and quarterback Marcus Mayo's 12-yard scoring pass to Derrick West gave the Panthers a 14-3 advantage at the break.
Harris added a 4-yard run minutes into the third quarter to put Ferrum ahead 21-3. After Averett answered with a 23-yard field goal by Scott, Ferrum responded with a 36-yard touchdown run by Dominique Lesine with 1:32 left in the quarter.
Mayo, who passed for 157 yards and rushed for 56 yards, connected for his second touchdown of the contest with a 15-yard pass to tight end Vince Munch early in the fourth quarter to extend Ferrum's lead to 34-6.
Trailing most of the game, Averett attacked from the air with mixed success. Although the Cougars racked up 315 passing yards (Brown and senior
Cody Ladutko each threw for more than 150 yards), they completed only 22 of 46 passes. Ferrum also limited Averett to a season-low 16 net yards rushing.
Averett will look to rebound in its season finale next Saturday at N.C. Wesleyan College.
