NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Christopher Newport University defeated Averett 80-42 on Tuesday night at the Freeman Center.

Averett (2-16, 0-5 USA South) and Christopher Newport (10-5, 3-1 USA South) played a tight game for most of the first half. Averett's Justin Pierce tied the game at 19-19 with 5:35 in the opening period, but things turned south soon after. The Captains finished off the half on a 12-0 run and continued that momentum into the second half.

The Cougars were held to a season-low 42 points after shooting a season-worst 22 percent from the floor. That, coupled with CNU's 51-30 advantage on the glass, helped the Captains pull away in the second half.

Pierce had a team-high nine points for Averett.

CNU was led by Conley Taylor's 20 points.

Averett will look to end its six-game skid on Saturday at home when the Cougars host N.C. Wesleyan College at 4 p.m.
