DANVILLE, Va. — Averett freshman running back Ke'Von White ran for 217 yards and two touchdowns, but it was a defensive stop that allowed the Cougars to prevail 28-21 in overtime over Methodist University on Saturday afternoon.

Averett (3-5, 2-3 USA South), which had the first possession in overtime, took a seven-point lead on a 1-yard run by sophomore quarterback Kirkland Brown. On Methodist's ensuing possession, the Monarchs rushed for 12 yards on first down to get down to the Averett 13-yard line. However, on the next play Methodist quarterback Max Reber fumbled the ball and Averett senior Robslin Emmanuel hopped on the loose ball to end the game and send the Cougars' sideline into an uproar.

Averett held on despite giving up a game-tying touchdown to Methodist (1-7, 0-5 USA South) with 33.9 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime.

Methodist opened the game a 7-0 lead on Reber's 1-yard run in the opening minutes of the game. Averett responded with White's first touchdown of the day from 22 yards out to knot the score.

White added a 6-yard touchdown run midway through the second quarter, but it amounted to only a 13-7 lead as a personal foul penalty backed up the extra point attempt, which fell short.

The Monarchs regained a 14-13 lead early in the third quarter on a 19-yard pass from Reber to Nathan Kindley. Once again, Averett responded with a scoring drive of its own, which culminated with Brown's 1-yard sneak. Averett set up for the extra point attempt, but Brown pitched the ball to junior Anthony Bowles for the two-point conversion to put the Cougars back in front by seven points.

Averett finished with 290 yards on the ground. White's 217 rushing yards topped his previous career high of 105 set last week, and his total on Saturday was the second-highest single game total in program history behind Kyle Wilson's 239 yards against Chowan in 2005.

The Cougars, who are now 4-0 all-time in overtime games, will look to carry the momentum into their home finale next Saturday against Shenandoah University at 1 p.m.
