DANVILLE, Va. — Time after time, Averett's shots just missed. Some wide, some high and even one off the post. Through it all, the Cougars remained patient and waited for the next opportunity.
It finally paid off in the second half as Averett railled to defeat Randolph-Macon College 2-1 in both teams' season-opener on Thursday at the Cougar Den.
After trailing 1-0 for most of the game, Averett (1-0) saw the fruits of its labor.
Pernilla Milton broke through the Yellow Jackets defense and powered a shot home from about 10 yards out to tie the score in the 75th minute.
The game was delayed with less than six minutes remaining due to lightning in the area, which allowed the Cougars to catch their breath. Less than a minute after play resumed, Milton struck again. The sophomore headed in a corner kick from
Sandra Johansson in the 84th minute, and Averett held off Randolph-Macon (0-1) the rest of the way.
Averett outshot Randolph-Macon 26-6 for the game, but the Yellow Jackets took advantage of an opportunity in the 34th minute. After getting ahead of the Averett defense, Erin Houser sent a cross to Meredith Eckles, who scored on a one-on-one with Averett goalkeeper
Malin Borjesson.
It was the second consecutive time Averett had beaten Randolph-Macon 2-1 in the season-opening game.
The Cougars return to action on Sept. 10 at Washington & Lee University.
