DANVILLE, Va. — Christopher Newport University spoiled Averett's Homecoming with a 28-13 victory over the Cougars on Saturday.
Christopher Newport (4-3, 3-1 USA South) led 14-0 at halftime, but Averett (1-6, 1-3 USA South) finally found success on offense in the third quarter. A 34-yard halfback pass by freshman
Nathan Driver to sophomore receiver
Anthony Terry put the Cougars deep into CNU territory. Averett also converted on a fourth-down play later in the drive, which eventually culminated with sophomore
Ke'Von White's 1-yard touchdown run to cut the Captains' lead to 14-7 with 4:46 left in the third quarter.
However, CNU answered almost immediately on its ensuing drive. After Averett stopped the Captains for a loss of 1 yard on first down, CNU quarterback Marcus Morrast found Rudy Rudolph for a 61-yard touchdown pass less than a minute after Averett's score.
With CNU ahead 21-7, Morrast slipped past Averett's defense for a 29-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter.
Averett found the end zone again with under five minutes to play. Freshman quarterback
Bryan Finney found Driver for a 2-yard pass across the middle, but the Cougars fumbled the hold on the extra point and still trailed 28-13.
The Cougars recovered an onside kick, but the drive ended with an interception in the end zone — the second pickof the day in the end zone by CNU's Marvin Mills — which all but ended Averett's chances at a comeback.
Terry led Averett's offense with seven catches for 83 yards. Finney finished with 140 yards passing with one touchdown.
Averett junior safety
Stefan Varner led the defense with nine tackles.
Averett hosts its final home game of the season next Saturday at 1 p.m. against Maryville College.
