Averett (7-9, 3-4 USA South) looked poised to pull an upset as the Cougars took a 5-0 lead over Christopher Newport (14-2, 7-1 USA South). However, the Captains answered with a 19-1 run to take control. Initially hot, the Cougars cooled off and shot just 22.2 percent in the first half and 26.4 percent for the game.
Christopher Newport, which led 44-23 at halftime, drilled 12 of 28 shots from beyond the arc to help the Captains distance themselves from the Cougars.
Pierce, who finished with a team-high 16 points after battling foul trouble in the first half, became only the ninth player in program history to reach the 1,000-point milestone. He now sits at 1,002 career-points, 86 behind Marcus Tucker on Averett's all-time scoring list.
Freshman
Trevor West led Averett with a career-high 12 rebounds to go with eight points, while junior
Paul Porter finished with nine points. Sophomore
Alex Lopez added six points late for the Cougars, who had their two-game winning streak snapped.
Averett returns to action on Saturday when it travels to play Greensboro College at 4 p.m.
