GREENSBORO, N.C. — Averett rallied in the final minutes to knock off conference foe Greensboro College 67-62 and extend its winning streak to five games on Wednesday night.
In a tight battle down the stretch in the second half, Averett (8-8, 5-1 USA South) found itself trailing 62-57 following a pair of Greensboro free throws with 2:32 remaining. The Cougars got a layup moments later, then turned a Pride turnover into more points. Senior
Paul Porter made a layup as he was fouled and drained the ensuing free throw to tie the game at 62-62 with 2:08 to play.
After a Greensboro timeout, both teams traded turnovers, leading the Pride to use another timeout with 1:24 to play. With less than a minute to play, Greensboro (6-10, 2-4 USA South) turned the ball over again. It proved to be costly as sophomore
Devontae Pannell drilled a 3-pointer to put Averett in front 65-62 with 45 seconds left.
Averett got a big stop at the other end thanks to a block by Porter and sophomore
Bradley Robinson made one of two free throws at the other end to push the Cougars' lead to four points. Greensboro missed a pair of 3-point attempts and junior
Cody Stephens added a free throw late to seal the victory.
The longtime conference foes were never separated by more than four points for almost the entire first half until Averett ended the period on a 5-0 run to take a 38-31 lead into the break. The Cougars' lead evaporated in the second half, allowing Greensboro to make a run and eventually take a lead down the stretch.
Sophomore
Carter Jones led three Averett players in double-digit scoring with 15 points. Freshman
Charles Bryant added 12 points and Stephens finished with 11 points and nine rebounds.
Devan Gregory led Greensboro with 20 points.
Averett returns to action at Piedmont College on Sunday.
