GREENSBORO, N.C. — Freshman Tobias Andreasson's goal with a mere 15 seconds left in double overtime lifted the Averett University's men's soccer team to a thrilling 2-1 win over Guilford College on Wednesday night.

Andreasson scored his first collegiate goal in the 110th minute, giving Averett (2-6-0) the non-conference victory over Guilford (4-7-0). Andreasson took senior midfielder Nathan Brown's through ball from the middle and snuck it past Quakers goalkeeper Marko Mandalinic, ending an epic battle that clocked in at two and a half hours.

The Quakers were the agressors early. Guilford's Colin Dillon recorded the first shot of the game in the third minute, but his attempt went high over the crossbar. The Quakers would challenge the Cougars again four minutes later, but Angel Valencia's header went high of the mark, keeping the score tied at 0-0. Guilford's Lucas Prillaman would challenge Averett senior goalkeeper Martin Erenstedt in the 11th minute, but Erenstedt was able to come up with the save. Erenstedt also made another big save for the Cougars in the 20th minute, when he denied Prillaman's second shot of the game.

Four minutes later, Averett freshman Martin Karemalm took a deflection off the post and buried it in the back of the net, giving Karemalm his second goal of the year and Averett a 1-0 lead. Karemalm would test Mandalinic again in the 27th minute, but Mandalinic made the save, keeping the score at 1-0 in advantage of the Cougars.

Erenstedt preserved the lead for Averett when he denied Guilford's Izzy Betancourt's shot in the 38th minute, giving the Cougars a 1-0 lead going into the break.

Brown led off the second half with an attempt on goal in the 48th minute, but Mandalinic was able to make the save. Senior midfielder Sam Muir's shot in the 49th minute deflected off the post. Muir nearly found the net in the 61st minute, but Mandalinic denied Muir's attempt, keeping the score at 1-0 Cougars.  Mandalinic made another save on goal for the Quakers in the 75th minute, denying junior midfielder Jordan Palma.

The Quakers Christian Torres gave Averett a scare in the 83rd minute, but Erenstedt was able to block Torres's attempt, preserving the Cougars lead. However, Jake Elsey knotted the score for Guilford in the 87th minute, when he took a pass from Valencia and buried in the back of the net, forcing overtime.

Neither teams were able to score in the first overtime period, but Andreasson's goal in the 110th minute gave the Cougars the victory.

Averett hosts Greensboro College on Saturday at Daly Field in a USA South Conference matchup at 7 p.m.
