DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University's men soccer team battled Greensboro College to a scoreless first half, but surrendered a late second half goal to lose to the Pride1-0 on Saturday night in the first night game played on the new Daly Field.
The Pride (5-6-0, 3-1-0 USA South) fired off seven first half shots, but the Cougars senior goalkeeper Martin Erenstedt recorded six saves to keep the score tied 0-0 after the first 45.
Averett (2-7-0, 0-3-0 USA South) was able to keep Greensboro from finding the net until the 84th when Greensboro's Shaun Watt headed in a shot from a Scott Fatyol free kick, giving the Pride their first goal and a 1-0 advantage with six minutes left to play.
Cougars' senior defensive midfielder Sam Muir tested the Pride's goalkeeper Logan Rohde in the 10th minute, but Rohde was able to make the save. Senior midfielder Nathan Brown fired off a shot in the 14th minute, but Rohde denied Brown his fourth goal of the year.
Brown added his second shot of the game in the 49th minute, but his attempt went high of the mark, preserving the Pride's 1-0 lead.
Averett junior midfielder Jordan Palma recorded one shot for the Cougars and Brown led the team with three shots.
The Cougars host Hampden-Sydney College on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Daly Field.
