DANVILLE, Va. — Averett senior
Sam Muir's last minute goal helped the Cougars pick up their first USA South conference win of the season, beating LaGrange College 3-2 on Saturday afternoon at Daly Field.
Averett (3-8-0, 1-3-0 USA South) came out on the offensive early, scoring the game's first goal in the sixth minute when Cougars' freshman midfielder
Kyle Mosley picked up the first goal of his collegiate career off an assist from
Nathan Brown.
However, Averett's lead would not last for long as the Panthers' Diego Torres took a pass from Adrien Vakerics and slipped his shot past Cougars' senior goalkeeper
Martin Erenstedt, evening the score at 1-1.
Muir would add an assist to his goal, when he found freshman
Tobias Andreasson in the 28th minute, giving the Cougars a 2-1 advantage. Averett's lead would hold until the 70th minute, when Vakerics fired a shot past Erenstedt, evening the score at 2-2.
The game appeared to be heading toward overtime, but Muir took the rebound off
Rasmus Lundquist's shot and slipped it past the Panthers' goalkeeper A.J. Wilson, giving the Cougars a thrilling 3-2 victory in the last minute.
Averett outshout LaGrange (1-11-1, 0-5-0 USA South) 28-10. Brown paced Averett with eight shots and junior midfielder
Jordan Palma added six. Muir and senior midfielder Chirstopher Koenig booted three shots, while Mosley fired off two. Erenstedt racked up four saves between the sticks for the Cougars.
Averett returns to action when they host Huntingdon College on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Daly Field.
