DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University women's soccer team finished the weekend undefeated, scoring four goals in the first period to shut out Huntingdon College 5-0 on Sunday afternoon.
Just like Saturday's game, freshman midfielder
Amanda Gustavsson started the scoring for Averett (3-9-0, 3-4-0 USA South) on a feed from senior midfielder
Cathrine Onarheim. Onarheim dribbled up the middle of the field and found Gustavsson cutting from left past a defender and into the box to take an early 1-0 lead in less than two minutes of play.
Gustavsson now leads the Cougars in scoring with five goals this season.
Later on, sophomore midfielder
Annalies Jobsis scored her first goal of the season with a penalty kick in the ninth minute to give Averett another edge over Huntingdon (2-11-0, 1-6-0 USA South).
The Cougars' sophomore midfielder
Johanna Ohrnberg and freshman midfielder
Pippa Burge also found the back of the net in the first period to lead the Hawks 4-0 at the break.
Averett outshot Huntingdon 19-0 in the first half, and after halftime, it was smooth sailing to the finish for the Cougars.
Averett scored again in the 60th minute on a corner kick. Jobsis sent the ball flying into the box, and senior defender
Emma Olsson got a piece of the ball and headed it into sophomore midfielder
Riley Smith's direction. Smith headed the ball into the goal to seal the match for Averett with its third consecutive win.
With Sunday's win, the Cougars move up to eighth place in the conference, and they are now 2-1 at home. They will play again at Daly Field on Wednesday at 5 p.m. against conference opponent Ferrum College (7-6, 4-3 USA South).
