DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University women's soccer team kept its winning streak alive in a 2-1 home victory over Ferrum College on Wednesday evening.
Â
In the beginning of the game, things were going Ferrum's way. The Panthers' Chloe Hudson netted the ball past Averett's
Kim Josephson in just the fourth minute of play for an early 1-0 lead.
Â
Despite close shots and good looks at the goal, Averett (4-9-0, 4-4-0 USA South) struggled to put the ball in the net with 11 shots in 15 minutes.
Â
But in the 21
st minute, things began to look up for the Cougars. Freshman midfielder
Amanda Gustavsson's header made its way between the posts off an
Annalies Jobsis corner kick and assist from
Riley Smith to tie the game 1-1.
Â
After halftime, neither team could find an offensive rhythm. Ferrum (7-7-0, 4-4-0 USA South) had trouble finding open shots as the Cougar backline refused to allow them near the goal for the majority of the second half. Â
Â
Even with its defensive efforts, Averett still needed a goal to seal the match, and it came in 76
th minute. Gustavsson fed the ball to freshman forward
Julia Ritcey who booted it in to edge the Panthers.
Â
With its fourth straight win, Averett is tied with Ferrum for 7
th place in the conference. The Cougars return to action at Daly Field on Saturday to take on Meredith College at 1 p.m.Â
