DANVILLE, Va. — Ferrum College held off Averett University 26-14 under the lights on Saturday, sending the Cougars to a USA South Conference loss at Daly Field.
Ferrum's defensive pressure disrupted Averett's offense on multiple drives in the second half, leading to several costly turnovers that hurt the Cougars' chances at a comeback following a 7-0 deficit at halftime. The Panthers forced an interception and a pair of fumbles in the second half and sealed the game with a sack in the end zone for a safety.
Although both teams struggled offensively in the first half, Ferrum (1-6, 1-4 USA South) managed to put together a scoring drive midway through the second quarter by taking advantage of a short field. The Panthers drive 46 yards on seven plays to go ahead 7-0 on quarterback Tim Reynolds' 4-yard touchdown run.
Averett (1-6, 0-5 USA South), however, got some momentum late in the third quarter with the help of a trick play. The Cougars took advantage of a poor Ferrum punt that netted only 10 yards. On the first play from scrimmage, backup junior quarterback
Drew Evans swung a lateral pass out to junior receiver
Bryan Finney, who stopped and threw a 43-yard touchdown pass to sophomore
Michael Barbour, who was wide open down the field. The score, Barbour's first career touchdown, trimmed Ferrum's lead to 10-7 with 3:19 left in the quarter.
The momentum was short-lived as Ferrum answered with a long scoring drive that crept into the fourth quarter. Reynolds found Troy Helton across the middle, and Helton broke several tackles 19 yards later to get into the end zone and help the Panthers extend their lead to 17-7.
After Reynolds added his second rushing touchdown with 4:58 left in the fourth quarter to push Ferrum's advantage to 24-7, Averett answered with its second scoring drive of the contest. Aided by a pair of Ferrum penalties, the Cougars got into the red zone and junior running back
Xavier Morgan scored from 2 yards out make it 24-14 and give Averett hope with 3:54 to play.
Ferrum recovered the on-side kick and killed more than a minute and a half off the clock before giving up the ball on fourth down deep in Averett territory. The Panthers' defense got to Averett senior quarterback
Kirkland Brown several times, forcing a fumble that Averett recovered and then getting a sack for a safety to clinch Ferrum's first win of the season.
Averett was limited to 150 yards of total offense, including only 15 net rushing yards.
Averett's defense was led by senior
Brian Fuquay and freshman
Hunter Shepherd, who both finished with 10 total tackles. Senior defensive end
Nico Peterson was also a highlight on defense, making five tackles and intercepting a pass for 33 yards.
The Cougars hit the road for a pair of games, beginning at Methodist University next Saturday at 1 p.m.
