DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University volleyball dropped a pair of USA South Conference matches on Friday, losing 3-0 to Covenant College and 3-1 to Maryville College as part of a conference quad match at the Grant Center.
Averett (11-10, 6-3) opened against Covenant (15-6, 5-1 USA South) to begin the day. The Cougars stumbled out of the gate and couldn't recover, losing 25-15, 25-21 and 25-20. Freshman
Christiana Summa led the Cougars with 22 digs, while freshman
Hannah Shields finished with 12 digs and 10 kills. Junior
Katelyn Holley added 14 digs and senior
Nicole Barringer had 13 kills and 24 assists.
In the nightcap, Averett took on defending USA South Tournament champion Maryville (13-8, 6-0 USA South). Although Averett gained momentum in the third set, the Scots took the match 25-21, 25-20, 27-25 and 25-21. Summa finished with a team-best 22 digs. Shields and freshman
Sarah Smoot had 18 kills and 13 kills respectively, while Barringer made 39 assists.
In between Averett's matches, Covenant and Maryville each dispatched Ferrum College 3-0.
Averett returns to action on Saturday with a pair of non-conference matches in Lynchburg, Virginia. The Cougars face Bridgewater College at 2 p.m. and host Lynchburg College at 4 p.m.
