DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University's men soccer team lost to Hampden-Sydney College 1-0 Tuesday afternoon at Daly Field.
The Cougars (2-8-0) held the Tigers (7-4-1) scoreless in the first half despite being outshout 8-2. Averett senior goalkeeper
Martin Erenstedt made three first half saves to keep the score tied at 0-0 going into the break.
Hampden-Sydney came out early on the offensive when the Tigers' Ryan Turner fired off a shot in the third minute, but Erenstedt was able to record the save. Cougars' junior midfielder
Jordan Palma came close to giving Averett the early lead in the fourth minute, but his attempt went wide of the mark.

Sam Muir tested the Tigers goalkeeper Cameron McFarlane in the 29th minute, but McFarlane was able to deny Muir his first goal of the season.
The Cougars were able to keep Hampden-Sydney off the board until the 50th minute when the Tigers' James Lawrence took Turner's through ball into the box and buried it passed Erenstedt, giving Hampden-Sydney a 1-0 lead.
Despite recording seven second-half shots, Averett was unable to find the back of the net. Freshman
Kyle Mosley came close to scoring the first goal of his collegiate career in the 57th minute, but his header was saved by McFarlane, preserving a 1-0 lead for the Tigers. Averett junior defensive midfielder
Brian Benitez came close to tying the game in the 60th minute, but his attempt was denied by McFarlane. Senior
Nathan Brown tested McFarlane six minutes later, but his shot was saved by the Tigers goalkeeper, keeping the score 1-0 in advantage of Hampden-Sydney.
Brown, Mosley, and Palma led the Cougars offense with two shots apiece. Erenstedt recorded six saves between the sticks.
Averett returns to action when it hosts conference foe LaGrange College on Saturday at Daly Field.
