Women's soccer loses to Meredith in quarterfinals

RALEIGH, N.C. — The Averett University women's soccer season came to an end on Saturday afternoon when top seed Meredith College defeated the Cougars 2-0 in the quarterfinals of the USA South Conference Tournament.

Meredith McCarty's corner kick in the 27th minute resulted in a goal from Jamison Kidd to give Meredith (13-4-2) a 1-0 lead midway through the first half.

Averett (5-13-0) was unable to get a shot off in the first period while the Avenging Angels fired 12 shots with seven on goal.

The score didn't change going into the break and for much of the second period. The Cougars managed to find four open shots but couldn't get them past Meredith goalkeeper Jaisa Loch.

Meredith extended the lead in the 82nd minute on a long pass from Megan Amantides to Danielle Lee. The senior forward's strike made its way to the back of the net, advancing the Avenging Angels to the semifinals of the tournament.

Averett goalkeeper Kim Josephson finished with 14 saves.
