Box ScoreFARMVILLE, Va. — The Averett University men's basketball team got its final preseason test in a 79-53 exhibition loss to Division I Longwood University on Friday night.
Although the game was only an exhibition for Averett, it counted as the season-opener for Longwood (1-0). Averett opens its regular season on Tuesday at Lynchburg College at 7 p.m.
The Cougars used the contest as an opportunity to work on its new schemes under first-year head coach
David Doino in a game environment. Although Averett was at times outmatched by Longwood's height, Doino was extremely happy with his team's intensity and effort.
Junior center
Carter Jones held his own against his counterparts, leading Averett with 19 points and six rebounds in 27 minutes of play. Seniors
Cody Stephens and
Darnell Collins also had a solid night, each chipping in with seven points off the bench. Freshman
James Contreras Jr. added six points while getting the start at guard.
The difference in the game was Longwood's 3-point shooting. The Lancers drained 11 3-pointers, including seven alone by Ryan Badowski, who led all scorers with 21 points. Longwood shot 50.9 percent from the floor overall.
The meeting between Averett and Longwood renewed an old rivalry between the two schools before Longwood transitioned to Division I from Division III. Coming into Friday's matchup, Averett was 5-6 all-time against Longwood and beat the Lancers the last time they faced off, 96-91, during the 1993-1994 season.
