DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University volleyball took down USA South Conference foe Methodist University 3-0 on Wednesday night at the Grant Center. The Cougars won 25-17, 25-19 and 25-23.
Averett (17-9, 9-2 USA South) cruised past Methodist (14-7, 7-5 USA South) in the first two sets. The Monarchs challenged Averett in the third set after building a 10-8 lead early. Neck and neck the rest of the way, Averett got three consecutive points late to take a 24-22 advantage. Although the Monarchs took the next point on a service error, Averett put Methodist away on sophomore
Jessica Sheek's block to end it.
The win gave Averett a sweep of the two-match series with Methodist. The Cougars also won 3-0 on Sept. 26 on their home floor.
Sophomore
Hannah Shields totaled 20 kills and 10 digs on the night. Sophomore
Sarah Smoot finished with 10 kills while hitting .348 for the match. Sophomore
Christiana Summa paced Averett with 18 digs, while seniors
Lindsey Boles and
Katelyn Holley finished with 12 digs and 11 digs, respectively. Freshman
Keenan Marks had 41 assists and a team-high four service aces.
Averett travels to Demorest, Georgia, for a conference quad match on Saturday. The Cougars face Ferrum College at 2 p.m. and host Piedmont College at 4 p.m.
