STAUNTON, Va. — The Averett University volleyball team swept Mary Baldwin College 3-0 (25-12, 25-13 and 25-19) on the road Wednesday night in a USA South match. The victory marks the Cougars' 20th win of the season, making this year
Danny Miller's 20th 20-win season of his career as head coach.
The first two sets were smooth sailing for Averett (20-9, 12-2 USA South). The Cougars gained an early 8-0 lead in the first set and stretched the margin by as much as 15 when Mary Baldwin trailed 22-7, struggling to keep the ball out of the net.
The third frame was much closer. Mary Baldwin (2-26, 0-16 USA South) took its first lead of the match in the beginning, but it didn't last too long. The squads rallied back and forth to take the advantage, however, it was difficult for the Squirrels to handle the power from Averett's attacks as the Cougars secured the win in the last period.
Sophomore
Hannah Shields paced Averett with 11 kills as freshman setter
Keenan Marks finished with 24 assists and a career-high of five service aces. Sophomores
Christiana Summa and
Jordyn Minton added 11 and nine digs, respectively.
Averett returns to the court on Saturday, Oct. 24 to host a conference quad-match at the Grant Center featuring Huntingdon College, LaGrange College and Ferrum College. The Cougars take on Huntingdon at 10 a.m. and will later face LaGrange at 4 p.m. for their Senior Day match.
