DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University volleyball survived a five-set match to beat Huntingdon College 3-2, then swept LaGrange College 3-0 to earn a pair of USA South Conference victories on Senior Day Saturday at the Grant Center.
Averett (22-9, 14-2 USA South) opened the conference quad match it hosted with a battle with Huntingdon. The Hawks took the opening set 25-22, but Averett bounced back to win the next two sets, 25-19 and 25-18. Huntingdon then dominated the fourth set 25-16, forcing a deciding fifth set. Averett rebounded to take the fifth frame 15-10 to escape with the win.
Against Huntingdon, sophomore
Hannah Shields notched a double-double of 20 kills and 13 digs, while freshman
Jordan Pitzer tallied 15 kills and sophomore
Sarah Smoot added 11 kills. Senior
Lindsey Boles totaled a team-best 22 digs, sophomore
Christiana Summa had 16 digs and senior
Katelyn Holley had 11 digs in the win.
Averett breezed past LaGrange 25-17, 25-19 and 25-21 in the final match of the day. Shields had a double-double of 17 kills and 15 digs. Boles again led the team with 17 digs and Summa had 15 digs. Smoot and sophomore
Jessica Sheek each had nine kills, while senior
Leslie Fulton had eight kills.
During the Cougars' match with LaGrange, Averett honored its three seniors — Boles, Fulton and Holley.
Averett hosts Greensboro College on Wednesday at 7 p.m. for its final home game of the regular season. That match will serve as the Cougars' Dig Pink game.
