DANVILLE, Va. — Covenant College tallied the game's lone goal 10 minutes into the game to earn a 1-0 victory over the Averett University men's soccer team on Friday night at Daly Field during Averett's Kick Pink match.
Covenant (4-9-2, 3-3-2 USA South) got on the board when Carl Simakoff found Noah Wiersema with a pass and Wiersema sent a chip in from 22-yards to give the Scots the early advantage.
Averett (5-10, 4-4 USA South) had plenty of opportunities to equalize as it outshot Covenant 25-9 in the contest. However, Covenant answered with solid defensive play to pick up the victory.
Following the Scots' goal, freshman
David Cuperman nearly tied the game when he found some space and fired off a shot, but the Scots' goalkeeper Daniel Kubin came up with a big save at the 10:44 mark. The Cougars also posted a trio of attempts to round out the first half, but were a little unlucky and trailed 1-0 at the break.
Averett came out swinging early in the second period, recording seven shots in the first 12 minutes, but Covenant's defense was up to the challenge and kept the Cougars off the board. Averett kept the offensive threats coming throughout the entire second half, outshooting Covenant 16-2, including nine on goal, but were unable to crack the score sheet.
Cuperman, freshman
Felix Squire and sophomore
Tobias Andreasson each paced the Cougars with five shots, while senior
Jordan Palma posted two and freshmen
Jov Hall and
Gabe Boysen contributed two as well.
Averett returns to action on Oct. 24 for its last home game of the season against conference foe Maryville College on Senior Night.
