DANVILLE, Va. – Covenant College put up points in the last 16 minutes of play to defeat the Averett University women's soccer team 2-0 in conference action on Friday afternoon at Daly Field during Averett's Kick Pink match.
Â
Covenant (9-4, 7-3 USA South) maintained possession for most of the game, keeping the ball on its side of the field, but even with 12 first half shots and seven corner kicks, the Scots couldn't find a way to score as Averett freshman goal keeper
Bailee Brown hauled in eight saves in the first frame.
Â
Averett (2-10-2, 2-7-1 USA South) battled throughout the second period to keep the Scots off the scoreboard after a scoreless opening half. Covenant had to put up six shots in the final half before finally notching a goal in the 75th minute. Andrea Hunt connected with Natalie Smith off a free kick, and Smith, who was open on the right side, nailed the ball towards the goal from 28 yards out. The ball bounced in front of Brown, off the crossbar and over the goal line to put the Scots ahead 1-0.
Â
Covenant added another goal when Summer Bader scored up the middle on a feed from Christy Barton in a 2-on-1 with just 16.4 seconds left in regulation.
Â
The Cougars return to action on Saturday, Oct. 24 for their last home game of the season against conference foe Maryville College at 5 p.m. Â
