GREENSBORO, N.C. — Averett University baseball dropped a pair of games to Greensboro College on Saturday afternoon at Ted Leonard Park. Greensboro defeated Averett 4-0 in the first game, then won the second 15-7.
In the nightcap, Greensboro (5-1, 5-1 USA South) jumped out early on Averett (1-3, 1-2 USA South), posting three runs in the second inning, seven in the third, and four in the fourth to take a 14-0 lead. Despite the early deficit, the Cougars cut into the Pride's lead with a five-run seventh inning. Greensboro walked the bases loaded, the fourth of which scored freshman
B.J. Purnell from third. Senior
Taylor Davis' ball hit to left field was misplayed, allowing three runs to score and Davis to get all the way to third on the error. Davis later scored on another Greensboro error moments later, cutting Averett's deficit to 15-6.
The Cougars added another run in the eighth on sophomore
Hunter Ashworth's RBI single, but that was as close as Averett would get.
Junior
Drew Evans led the Cougars with two hits and Davis added a solo home run. Seniors
J.T. Crowder and
Kevin Alvarez finished with one RBI apiece.
In the first half of the doubleheader, Averett had a chance to break the game open in the top of the first when a series of errors and walks loaded the bases. However, the Cougars couldn't capitalize on the opportunity. The Pride took a 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the frame thanks to two one-out singles and an RBI fielder's choice.
Trailing 2-0 in the top half of the fourth, the Cougars put runners on first and second with two outs after senior
Chatham Currie singled and Ashworth drew a walk. Once again, though, Averett couldn't take advantage, leaving two runners stranded.
The Pride added two insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull away.
Junior
T.J. Viracola (0-1) took the loss in the opener for Averett despite striking out eight in 6.2 innings.
Crowder recorded two of the Cougars' five hits in Game 1.
Averett hosts Hampden-Sydney College on Wednesday at 3 p.m. in its home-opener at Owen-Fulton Field.
