Women's tennis tops Southern Virginia for first win

DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University women's tennis picked up a 6-3 non-conference win over Southern Virginia University on Thursday afternoon at the Averett Tennis Courts.

Averett (1-4) picked up two wins in doubles play to begin the match. Freshman Hannah Mattson and sophomore Katie Abelseth teamed up to beat Southern Virginia's Rachel Christensen and Micah Roberts 9-7 at No. 2 doubles. Sophomores Annalies Jobsis and Riley Smith dominated Kary Stollenwerk and Ashley Adamson 8-1 at the No. 3 position.

Mattson also was successful at No. 1 singles, beating Elizabeth Fuchs 6-2, 6-0. Smith earned a hard-fought win at No. 4 singles over Roberts with a 7-6 (4-0), 5-7, 10-5 win. Abelseth and Jobsis also won at the No. 5 and No. 6 spots, respectively, in straight sets.

Averett is scheduled to host conference foe Greensboro College on Saturday at 2 p.m.
