Box Score

DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University women's tennis had its senior day spoiled by Hollins University, which came from behind to edge the Cougars 5-4 on Sunday afternoon at the Averett Tennis Courts.

Averett (1-5) took an early 2-1 lead following doubles play. Freshman Hannah Mattson and sophomore Kaie Abelseth teamed up to knock off Hollins' Madeline Perry and Htet Myat San 8-4 at No. 2 doubles. Sophomores Riley Smith and Annalies Jobsis also collaborated for an 8-6 victory at the No. 3 position.

Hollins, however, won four of the six singles matches to steal away the victory. Averett's lone points in singles play came at No. 3 and No. 4. Junior Jessie Gomes ousted Perry 6-3, 6-2. Meanwhile, Smith came back to beat Jhovanna Salmeron 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.

In between doubles and singles play, Averett honored its lone senior, Morgan Epstein.

Averett returns to action on Friday when the Cougars play host to Methodist University at 6:15 p.m. at the George Washington High School Tennis Courts.
