Hannah Mattson got things started off on the right foot for Averett (4-10, 3-6 USA South) with a 6-4, 6-4 sweep of Rebecca Harbeck in the No. 1 singles match. Picking up where Mattson left off, junior
Jessie Gomes took the No. 2 singles contest 6-1, 6-0, and sophomore
Riley Smith took down Kelsey Nicely 6-0, 6-4 in the No. 3 singles spot to keep the momentum rolling for the Cougars. In the No. 4 singles spot, sophomore
Katie Abelseth topped Kisainya Miller 6-1, 7-5, and fellow sophomore
Annalies Jobsis dispatched Raquel Ramseur 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 5 singles battle. Sophomore
Angelica Orlikowski rounded out singles play with a 6-1, 6-2 victory in the No. 6 singles slot.
Averett handled Ferrum in doubles action as well. Mattson and Abelseth teamed up for an 8-4 win in the No. 1 doubles contest, and Gomes and Orlikowski took down Miller and Ashley Foster 9-7 in the No. 2 spot. Smith and Jobsis kept the winning streak alive for the Cougars, handling Ramseur and Hannah Blake an 8-1 loss in the No. 3 doubles match.
The Cougars return to the court on Sunday as they battle William Peace in USA South conference action at 1 p.m. in Raleigh, North Carolina.
