MOUNT BERRY, Ga. — Oglethorpe University scored on a late penalty kick in the 89th minute to beat the Averett University men's soccer team 3-2 on the concluding day of the Berry College Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
After a foul in the box gave Oglethrope (3-1-1) a late look on goal, Martin Edelman's shot found pay dirt, sending the Stormy Petrels to the late victory.
Averett (1-4) got off to a hot start when senior
Jordan Palma snuck his shot past Vaughn Moore to give the Cougars a 1-0 edge. Freshman
Ville Hautakangas doubled down on Averett's lead in the 39th minute when his shot found the back of the net to put the Cougars ahead 2-0, a lead they would take into the break.
Despite trailing 2-0, Ogelthorpe found a way to get things going in the second period. Nick Muntean got the Stormy Petrels on the board at the 52:11 mark to cut Averett's lead in half. Five minutes later, Oglethorpe found the equalizer when Erik Marquez took a pass from Jonathan Guy and fired in his shot to knot the score at 2-2. Neither team would score again until the 89th minute when Edelman's goal put the Cougars behind for the first time all afternoon.
Freshman
Christian Hester made his debut in goal count, recording 12 saves between the sticks for Averett. Offensively, the Cougars were led by sophomore
Tobias Andreasson who recorded three shots on goal, while freshmen
Felix Squire and
Huso Dukic each added one attempt for Averett.
The Cougars return to action on Sept. 16 when they host Lynchburg College at 7 p.m. to conclude their non-conference schedule.
