DANVILLE, Va. – The Averett University women's soccer team suffered a 4-0 loss to St. Mary's College of Maryland in its home opener at Daly Field on Sunday afternoon.
St. Mary's Gillian Sawyer kicked off the momentum for the Seahawks, scoring in the 35th minute to put her squad out front 1-0.
Although the Cougars had a difficult time finding the back of the net, they had good looks but just couldn't connect. The team totaled nine shots with six on goal compared to St. Mary's 31 shots with 15 on goal. Averett's freshman goalkeeper
Bailee Brown raked in 11 saves, and in Averett's two games this season, Brown has averaged 12 saves.
Throughout the game, St. Mary's (1-2-0) fought to keep the ball away from its own backline, and often broke away for an open look. Sawyer netted another goal midway through the second half to give the Seahawks a comfortable 2-0 lead, and Claire Kostelnik put in two consecutive goals in under a minute, giving the Cougars their first loss of the season.
Averett (0-1-1) faces Bridgewater College on Sept. 9 at 5 p.m. before entering conference play on Sept. 18.
