DANVILLE, Va. — With the game tied at 1-1 entering the final four minutes, the Averett University men's soccer team appeared to be headed to an overtime showdown with LaGrange College.
However, sophomore
David Cuperman took a cross from junior
Tobias Andreasson on the left side and buried his shot into the back of the net to lift Averett (4-8, 3-2 USA South) to a thrilling 2-1 victory over LaGrange on Saturday at Daly Field.
It was Cuperman's third goal of the season and fourth game-winner of his career.
After falling behind early in the second half, sophomore
Felix Squire diced through the Panthers' defense on his way to his second goal of the season, which knotted the game at 1-1 with just over 12 minutes left in regulation.
LaGrange (3-6, 1-2 USA South) struck first when Connor Liney found Jonathan Mann on a throw in and Mann headed in his shot from just a few feet out to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead in the 49th minute. However, the Panthers' defense faltered late, allowing the Cougars several good looks on goal that Averett capitalized on.
The Cougars recorded a season-high 22 shots on goal in the victory. Andreasson and Squire led the way with five shots apiece, while Cuperman fired three.
Averett jumps right back into conference play when it hosts Huntingdon College at 1 p.m. at Daly Field.
