DANVILLE, VA. — The Averett University women's soccer team shut out Mary Baldwin University in a 10-0 victory on Saturday evening during Senior Day at Frank R. Campbell Stadium.
Â
In a fitting way to begin the match, seniors
Ashleigh Yando,
Annalies Jobsis and
Ebonee Strother each scored a goal in less than 10 minutes of action to give Averett (9-8, 7-6 USA South) a 3-0 lead. The goals from Jobsis and Strother came after senior midfielder
Katie Abelseth found both of her teammates on the left side. Abelseth worked to create more open shots for her teammates, and in the 24th minute, she located sophomore
Skye Gunn in the middle for shot from 10 yards out.Â
Â
Abelseth, who finished with three assists, nailed a shot of her own from the middle in the second half with a feed from sophomore
Eimear Reddin as the Cougars took a commanding 8-0 lead by the 60th minute.
Â
Sophomore midfielder
Kaitlyn Barbour scored two goals for the Cougars as
Nia Johnson and
T'era Brown also added a goal apiece.
Â
Other seniors who were honored during the game included
Johanna Ohrnberg,
Melissa Sanchez and
Riley Smith.
Â
Averett returns to action Sunday, Oct. 23, to play its last regular season game. The Cougars will face Ferrum College at 6 p.m. in their White Out Game at Frank R. Campbell Stadium.Â
