GREENSBORO, N.C. – Greensboro College defeated the Averett University women's basketball team 88-60 on Saturday afternoon at Hanes Gymnasium.
Averett (11-11, 6-7 USA South) tried to hang with Greensboro (12-8, 8-3 USA South) in the first quarter and managed to keep the game within nine points, but the Pride
began to pull away slowly midway through the second quarter.
Junior guard
Ariana Covington, who finished with 17 points, trimmed Greensboro's lead to three (23-20) early in the second period. Unfortunately, the Pride combated Averett's effort with a 10-2 run and took a 46-30 lead at halftime.
Greensboro maintained their lead and led the entire way while Averett couldn't get its shots to fall. With little presence in the post for Averett, Greensboro capitalized with its height advantage on the inside to grab rebounds and get easy put-backs. The Cougars found open shots and penetrated the gaps to draw fouls, but they struggled from the free throw line, eventually allowing Greensboro to walk away with the conference win.
Sophomore shooting guard finished with 22 points, and senior guard
Jessica Myers added nine rebounds for the Cougars.
Averett returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 17, to host Methodist University at the Grant Center at 5:30 p.m.
