DANVILLE, Va. – The Averett University women's basketball team pulled out a 66-63 conference win over Methodist University on Wednesday night at the Grant Center.
The game was close all the way through, but Averett (12-11, 7-7 USA South) led by as much as 10 in the third quarter when sophomore shooting guard
Samm Chandler knocked down a triple on a dish from sophomore guard
Frida Lundquist. Later in the quarter, Alexis Wallace's last-second layup capped a 10-0 run for Methodist (12-9, 7-6 USA South), tying the contest at 45-45 going into the fourth frame.
After a series of traded baskets, Averett moved ahead 62-58 on two good free throws from Chandler with 59 seconds left in regulation. While the Cougars had the lead 65-60 lead, the Monarchs made the game even more interesting with just nine seconds to go. Alexia Hite hit a 3-pointer to close Averett's the gap to three, but the Cougars were able to maintain composure and come out with the conference victory.
Chandler led Averett with a double-double of 22 points and 11 rebounds while senior guard
Jessica Myers finished with 13 points, seven rebounds and a career-high of seven assists. Senior forward
Oneka Jones added 10 rebounds and eight points.
Wallace paced the Monarchs with 22 points and 11 rebounds.
Averett returns to the Grant Center on Saturday, Feb. 20, to host Mary Baldwin College at 2 p.m.
