DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University volleyball dropped a non-conference match with Washington and Lee University 3-1 on Wednesday night at the Grant Center. The Generals won 25-20, 20-25, 25-20 and 25-17.
Despite leading very early in the first set, Averett (7-3) fell behind 10-3 only to rallied and get within 13-11. Washington and Lee (8-1) held off the Cougars the rest of the way to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
Averett bounced back in the second set. The Cougars grabbed the early lead and never relinquished it despite several comeback attempts by Washington and Lee.
Washington and Lee went up 2-1 in the match by fending off Averett in the third set. The Generals led midway through before Averett battled back to tie it at 17-17 on junior
Lynsey Corriher's service ace. A Washington and Lee kill and a pair of Averett attack errors gave the Generals the space they needed to pull away late. They took that momentum into the fourth set to clinch the match and their second win over the Cougars in less than a week.
The Generals topped Averett 3-0 last Friday in the Washington and Lee Invitational.
