GREENSBORO, N.C. — Junior
Christine Harris scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 66th minute for the Averett University women's soccer team to deliver a 2-1 win over Greensboro College in its conference opener.
Â
Senior forward
Annalies Jobsis linked up with Harris for the goal after a rebound from a deflection, but early on, it was Jobsis who gave the Pride some trouble. Averett (3-1, 1-0 USA South) gained a 1-0 lead when Jobsis netted her sixth goal of the season at the 18:47 mark. She nailed her only shot of the game, which was one of just six shots from the Cougars as four were on target.
Â
Greensboro did, however, manage to knot the match a few minutes before halftime on a score from Anna Rae Porcelli. Despite taking 29 shots with 11 on goal, the Pride (4-1, 0-1 USA South) failed to get another attempt past Averett goalkeeper
Bailee Brown, who finished the evening with 10 saves. Â
Â
"We struggled to play our style in the first half but then really started to do the things we do best in the second half," head coach
Sarah Chapman said. "We scored two hardworking goals and stayed confident to finish out the game to get the win."
Â
The Cougars travel to Cary, North Carolina, on Sept. 18 at 1 p.m. to face William Peace University in USA South action before returning home to take on Meredith College on Wednesday, Sept. 21.
