NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Averett University volleyball split a pair of matches on the final day of the Christopher Newport University Invitational on Saturday. The Cougars took No. 15 CNU to five sets before falling 3-2, then edged the University of Scranton 3-2.

Emily Stanley earned a spot on the all-tournament team.
To finish off the two-day tournament, Averett (8-6) held off Scranton (7-7) 25-19, 25-22, 23-25, 13-25, 15-10. Shields's double-double of 17 kills, 15 digs and four blocks paced Averett, which got 16 kills and four blocks from freshman
Brianna Williams and 16 digs from Stanley. Sophomore
Keenan Marks finished 32 assists and 10 digs and junior
Christiana Summa had 12 digs and three service aces in the victory.
Averett was coming off a heartbreaker against the nationally ranked Captains. The Cougars won the first two sets 26-24 and 25-19, respectively. After dropping the third set 25-19, Averett and CNU (7-3) went to extra points in the fourth frame, with the Captains holding on 28-26. CNU then took the deciding set 15-8.
Shields tallied 22 kills and 21 digs against the host Captains. Juniors
Sarah Smoot and
Lynsey Corriher each had 10 kills, and Stanley had a team-high 23 digs. Marks had 44 assists and 17 digs and Summa chipped in 12 digs. Senior
Brittany Daley had a team-high six blocks.
Averett begins conference play on Friday against Maryville College and Wesleyan College in Maryville, Tennessee.
